Friday night Luther Men's Tennis will be heading down to the University of Iowa to take part in the IIAC Tennis Championships. They will be coming in as the #2 seed after losing to Coe College earlier in the season. The Norse will have a bye in the first round and will therefore not play on Friday night, but will play Saturday morning at 9:00AM. They will face off against either Cornell or Wartburg, two worthy opponents.

Post Spring Break Update
Since Spring Break the Norse have had an up and down season.
In conference play the Norse lost to Coe College 4-5 inside at Coe College. The match was extremely close with #1 doubles winning but #2 and #3 lost in close matches. After being down 1-2, the Norse fought back in singles, but it wasn't enough. Winning singles matches was Scott Sundstrom, Ramesh Karki, and Nick Mozena. The match was tied at 4-4 with the match coming down to #6 singles in which Sam Burman played Jeff Damisch. This came down to the third set. Tied at 4-4 Sam Burman was up 30-15 when Damisch made an absolutely terrible call. Burm hit a second serve ace and Damisch called it out, it happened to be right in front of the entire Luther team as well as Brian Huinker, the Norse head coach. Sam ended up losing the match 6-4 in the third, but fought hard in order to get back into the match after losing the third set.
Moving on, Luther lost another 4-5 match against Carleton College. Luther lost at #2 and #3 doubles, but won at #1 doubles. Winning in singles were #1 Scott Sundstrom, #3 Ramesh Karki, and #6 Sam Burman. Aaron Gendron also played a close match at #5, this match went into a third set, but Aaron lost 6-2 in the third.
After losing to Carleton, Luther played St. Olaf. After being down 0-3 after singles, Luther posted three wins in third set tiebreakers and two straight set wins to win the match. A huge comeback.
After Easter the Norse took down conference rivals Wartburg 7-2, but lost to Gustavus Adolphus College on a Sunday evening 8-1 after Ramesh Karki captured the only singles victory.

Spring Break 2011
The Norse Tennis team headed down to Orlando, Florida this morning to face off against some great NCAA Division III tennis teams. Highlighted matches include UW Whitewater, Grinnell College, and Colorado College. Graceland University
The Norse competed hard tonight but took a beating from Graceland. We were defeated 9-0 by Graceland. It was a disappointing night for the Norse.

Norse Basketball Win First Round of NCAAs!!
Congratulations to the Luther College Men's Basketball team as they defeated Concordia (Milwaukee) in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. This was a great win for the Norse as it was their first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 27 years ago!
Tomorrow evening they face off against UW-Stevens Point, the #3 ranked team in the nation.

Depauw University
This weekend, we face off against Depauw University which is located in the distant city of Greencastle, Indiana. This is about seven hours away from Luther and the team really enjoyed spending time together in the comfortable and luxurious Luther school vans. Everyone woke up pretty early on Saturday morning and we arrived at Depauw's tennis center at 7:30 am. After a good warm up on the foreign hard courts, we began doubles play. Number three doubles finished first losing a quick and disappointing match. Number two doubles started off up 3-0, but Depauw proved to be a levelheaded team and came back to defeat the two doubles team. At number one doubles, Sundstrom and Karki prevailed in a tiebreaker that was extremely tight.
We were down 1-2 at this point, but felt that we had an advantage in singles.
The singles matches were very close. Finishing first was number 3 singles. Depauw won this match. Their player was extremely consistent and played an excellent match. The second match to finish was #4 where Mozena was defeated in a lopsided match. Next, Gendron finished, defeating the Depauw #5 player. Burman was defeated at #6 singles, but Whiteley won at #2 singles and Sundstrom also won at #1 singles. Theses were great wins for our #1 and 2 players.
This was a hard match to swallow for us, but we came back in the afternoon with a good attitude and defeated Grand Valley State in another close match.

University of Wisconsin LaCrosse
This afternoon the Norse faced off against the 16th ranked team in the ITA Central Section, UW Lacrosse and came out victorious. This was the first ranked team that the Norse have played this year and the first extremely challenging team that we played. We came out a little tentative in the first set and were down a break in #1 and #3 doubles. LaCrosse played excellent in doubles and showed that they have a great doubles line up. Number one doubles ended up coming back from that break down and winning the match while #3 doubles fought hard but couldn't quite bring the match back into grasp. Here is how the scores went down:

Harry is a senior and is looking to have his best season in his career at Luther. Also winning important matches were Sam Burman and Aaron Gendron. Here is how the singles matches concluded:

This was a great weekend for Luther tennis, knocking off the #16 team in the Central Region. This was our first ranked opponent we faced all year and we feel like we handled them quite nicely. We were very mature in our win and worked together as a team to overcome the two breaks we were down in the doubles matches. This match could have very easily gone a different way, us being down 1-2 and having a much different attitude going into singles, instead Sundstrom/Karki pulled through and won their doubles match. This was a great day and a great way to go into next weekend which we face two very good teams; Depauw who is currently ranked #18 in the nation and Grand Valley State, a very good NCAA Division II team.
